Science in the Literacy Classroom? Impossible!

Nothing is impossible for our learners here at Trinity Academy Newcastle Upper Site; and our recent drop-down day, dedicated to Science, was no exception.
Learners in Yellow and Magenta were stand-outs for us in the English department. Ms. Finnegan’s excellent resources surrounding the Mars One Project opened up marvellous discussions surrounding the practical, ethical and moral implications of settling a human colony on Mars. All of our learners gave incredibly detailed and mature responses and responded to others’ opinions and ideas with kindness and respect (something we take a lot of pride in here at Trinity Upper Site).
We then created itemised lists of things we would need to consider and take with us to Mars, some of our learners even evaluated the pros and cons of living in the first human colony there and produced analytical written pieces for the rest of the class to read. We are currently creating a Science Day display for this tremendous work, so it can shine where everyone can see it.
This whole experience was uplifting, exciting, and engaging for both students and staff, and we owe Ms Finnegan a HUGE thank you for all of her efforts! Seeing our learners enjoying participating in such important scientific advancement debates and taking pride in their finished work, was a highlight for the staff here at Trinity Academy Newcastle Upper Site; and we hope to have more opportunities to experience other subjects in our Literacy classroom very soon.
