Celebrating Exceptional English: This Month’s ‘Wow Work’ Winners

Learners who have produced exceptional work in English have the opportunity to have their work displayed on the ‘Wow Work’ display. Currently, we have two fantastic pieces of writing: one is a descriptive piece from a Year 11 learner, and the other is a diary entry from a Year 9 learner.

The descriptive piece, written by a learner from Grey Group, showcases some fantastic use of English language techniques, including onomatopoeia, imaginative adjectives, and similes. When embarking on a creative writing task, our learners are encouraged to refer to the mnemonic ‘GOMASSIVE’ to help them incorporate language techniques that add depth and improve the overall quality of their writing.

The diary entry, produced by a learner in Blue Group, was written from the perspective of a groundling—a spectator at a Shakespearean theatre—and describes their experience watching a play. This piece demonstrates brilliant use of adjectives, strong creativity, and clear engagement with previous lesson content. For this task, learners were asked to embed facts about the Elizabethan era from a video they had watched, helping to contextualise their writing and capture the imagination of the reader. This learner showed excellent recall of prior learning and fulfilled the brief particularly well by offering their opinion on the fact that female roles were played by male actors.

Congratulations again to both learners for their outstanding work. There is still one more spot available on the ‘Wow Work’ display, and we are excited to see who will claim it next!
